Belém, Brazil—Over 70,0000 peoples marched along the streets of Belém, in Brazil, on November 15th to tell the leaders of the world—No more delay, genuine climate action now! Indigenous peoples, frontline communities, climate justice movements, queer and trans persons, youth groups, fisherfolk, peasants, workers both formal and informal, women, families and concerned citizens united under the Peoples’ Summit ‘Grand March’ carrying their messages which can be summed up largely into the following set of demands:
- People are united against colonialism and occupation everywhere.
- Respect indigenous peoples and frontline communities’ rights, forests, territories and knowledge.
- A fair, funded and equitable phase out from fossil fuels is inevitable.
- A Just, inclusive and popular transition in food and energy systems and timely adaptation is the real solution.
- The Global South demands reparations and it’s time for the Global North to #PayUp and do their fair share.
The 4 kilometer long march also saw people holding up messaging on the above stated issues and also against false solutions like The Forever Forest Facility (TFFF), debt swaps and demanded accountability from the climate talks for enabling zionist and corporate capture.
Inside the halls of the UNFCCC, the Brazilian Presidency is continuing its consultations with parties into Week 2 of the talks on issues of finance, forests, emissions, transitions and accountability that will make up the outcome from COP30. And while the proposals from Global South countries echo what peoples are demanding on the streets, the question remains—Will the Global North governments pay heed or dismiss this resounding call from the peoples of the world?
